If you've been comparing hair extension options and keep landing on two very different terms, micro weft and tape, you're not alone. Both are excellent methods, but they solve different problems. So what's the actual difference, and how do you know which one is right for you?
Micro Weft (Genius Weft)
| Our micro weft, also called genius weft, uses an exceptionally fine seam, one of the finest and most seamless weft extensions available. Because the seam is so fine, we can stack multiple panels together to create volume without bulk at the roots, and there's no fringe section underneath, meaning no short, spiky hairs that can feel itchy. In person, this is usually what surprises people most. The bonded spine of our micro weft is often finer than it looks in photos. If you've had a machine weft or a flat weft before, the kind with a chunkier sewn-in base, a fringe section, or a more rigid base you stay aware of while it's in, the difference in comfort is immediate. Micro weft is our default recommendation for most people. It's best for your hair and scalp health, suits most hair types, and works well as an all-round option for adding volume across the whole head. If your hair is particularly fine, we'll either reduce the number of wefts per row to lighten the weight, or look at a different method altogether if a weft still isn't the right fit for your hair's density. |  |
Invisible Tape
| Our invisible tape extensions use individually hand-injected hair at the tape seam, sitting flat against the head and blending seamlessly with your natural hair. It's a different method to classic tape extensions, and most people haven't seen it before. Once you see how flawlessly it blends, it's easy to understand why it's become so popular. Tape is our targeted option. Rather than sitting in a halo section around the whole head like a weft, tape can be placed in specific areas, useful for filling gaps, adding coverage to finer sides, or working around areas where the hair is thinner. Because a weft applies weight all the way around the head, it isn't always safe or appropriate for hair that's fragile or thinning in specific spots. Tape lets us apply extensions only where the natural hair is strong enough to hold the weight, which gives us more control in these situations, including for clients managing hair loss in certain areas. If you're after extensions across your whole head for maximum volume, tape usually isn't the method we'd reach for, that's what weft is built for. And if your only goal is targeted coverage in one specific area, a full weft install isn't necessary either. Maintenance and How Long Each One Lasts
Both methods use the same quality hair, and in both cases, the hair itself is designed to last 9 to 12 months, often longer with proper care and aftercare. Where they differ is in the maintenance process and how the bonded area holds up over time.
Micro weft move-ups are a quicker process. Tape maintenance takes more time, the tape needs to be fully removed, the adhesive cleansed from the hair, then reapplied. Both are typically booked every 6 to 8 weeks.
In general, micro weft tends to hold up a little longer overall. The bonded base is sturdy through repeated removal and reapplication. The bond area on tape extensions is subject to more pulling and reshaping each time it's removed, retaped and reapplied, and over time this can cause the bond to stretch and eventually become unusable sooner than a weft's base would.
